The LIFE MySOIL project was presented in the 16th edition of the SiCon Workshop “Contaminated sites. Experiences in remediation interventions”, which took place place at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Brescia (Italy) on February 12th-14th, 2025.

Fiora Bagnato, Senior R&D Specialist from Eni Rewind, displayed a poster presenting the Italian experience of LIFE MySOIL, including the large pilot mycopile design, construction, operation, characterisation and results. The poster also included the main microbiological results.

The findings of pilot-scale tests highlight the potential of mycoremediation, in terms of contaminants removal efficiency, for implementation at industrial scale. Furthermore, the use of an agro-industry waste (spent mushroom substrate, SMS), both acting as fungal inoculum and as bulking agent, is in line with the circular economy principles.

Additionally, this LIFE MySOIL research was disseminated with the conference session presentation “A full-scale assessment of mycoremediation of a hydrocarbon-contaminated soil”, jointly delivered by Eni Rewnid and the University of Tuscia.

The SiCon workshop allowed for a forum of discussions between bioremediation operators, providing participants with a broad overview of what has been achieved to date in the field, with specific emphasis on technical-operational aspects. In this sense, during the workshop, case studies of remediation and safety of -contaminated sites on an industrial scale were illustrated.
