Life cycle assessment and life cycle costing of small pilot mycopiles
Through life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis, an evaluation of the environmental and economic profile of the MySOIL small pilot from Spain, Italy, France was carried out, in comparison with on-site thermal desorption technology (baseline). The LCA results show that the French small pilot has the lower environmental impact compared to the Spanish and Italian small pilot, and the baseline, this is because French pilot doesn´t have a transportation of the contaminated soil to the study site and in addition, it has a lower electricity consumption. The small pilot from Italian has the highest impact in the electricity consumption (used for the aeration of the mesocosm), while the pilot from Spain has the highest impact on the transport of the contaminated soil to the Spanish site. The LCC results show that the French pilot has the lowest cost to treat the contaminated soil, compared to the thermal desorption, and the Spanish and Italy small pilot. Moreover, process such as the electricity consumption and transport have the higher cost in the Spanish and Italian MySOIL small pilot.
This first deliverable on tasks C1.1 and C1.2 should help partners to be aware of the environmental and economic impacts at the small pilot stage, so that they can reduce them on a pilot scale (50 m3 biopiles). This deliverable will be used to develop the deliverables:
- C1.1 Environmental assessment of MySOIL technology. Life Cycle Assessment
- C1.2 Economical assessment of MySOIL technology. Life Cycle Costs
- C1.3 Socioeconomic assessment of MySOIL technology
