White Paper - Fungal-based Remediation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Polluted Soil

The LIFE MySOIL project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of mycoremediation technology at pilot scale for the removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), providing valuable insights into the conditions required for a cost-effective, scalable, and sustainable full-scale application.

Mycoremediation harnesses the natural capacity of fungi to degrade contaminants. Thanks to their unique enzymatic systems, fungi can break down even complex petroleum hydrocarbons, achieving performances comparable to—or better than—traditional approaches.

Unlike thermal treatments, fungal-based remediation does not sterilize the soil. Instead, it restores ecological functionality, improving soil health and biodiversity. Furthermore, LIFE MySOIL integrates circular economy principles by reusing spent mushroom substrate (SMS)—a by-product of mushroom cultivation—as both a fungal inoculum and an organic amendment. This strategy reduces costs, minimizes environmental impact, and adds value to agricultural residues.

One of the project’s key objectives is to foster broader adoption and commercialization of mycoremediation technologies. To this end, a comprehensive legislative gap analysis on brownfield and contaminated soil management has been conducted, followed by the preparation of a White Paper containing policy recommendations to address the identified gaps and promote the deployment of fungal-based remediation solutions across Europe.
