Guidelines for implementation of mycoremediation

These guidelines present a practical framework for implementing mycoremediation - a sustainable technique that uses fungi to remove organic pollutants, such as petroleum hydrocarbons, from contaminated soils.

Based on the successful pilot-scale applications across different sites in Europe during the LIFE MySOIL project, this document offers step-by-step guidance, from initial site characterization and laboratory testing to the design, construction and monitoring of mycopiles, where the process takes place. Among the recommendations, a key one is the use of Spent Mushroom Substrate (SMS), an agricultural by-product, as a cost-effective and eco-friendly fungal inoculum. This approach not only improves remediation performance but also embraces circular economy principles by turning waste into a resource.

Overall, mycoremediation has proven effective in degrading persistent contaminants while also actively contributing to restoring soil biological activity and health. As a low-impact alternative to energy-intensive remediation methods, it offers a proven pathway to reclaim polluted land and return it to productive use.
